Labels

Spec Systems have over the years developed the perfect combinations of label material and thermal transfer ribbon for your printing application. Our game is barcoding and identification, in all kinds of environments, from warehousing, box labeling, freezer rooms and even the harshest external applications. We only make use of the highest grade of material, with full technical support from our paper suppliers guaranteed.  The right combination of top sheet for optimal printing results and durability, coupled with the right blend of adhesive, and of course our top notch converting plant, ensures you of “on-time” deliveries, and consistent print quality.

We loosely classify our material into four main categories. These are:

Paper

This includes materials like Transfer Ultra, and Transfer Standard, Semi Gloss and finally Vellum.
For best printing results we highly recommend the combination on Transfer Ultra and our Superior quality premium wax ribbon, converted at our facility in Johannesburg. Transfer Ultra and a high quality wax ribbon ensures not only fantastic definition on printed objects such as barcodes and fine text, but also offers a good scuff resistance.
Semi-Gloss is a very popular choice in the South African market due to a slightly lower cost per square meter, and although it offers good print quality, the scuff resistance is not as good as Transfer Ultra.

Synthetics

Typically used in harsher applications, this category includes, Gloss Polyprop, Dairy Film and Vinyls.
This category is very popular in chemical applications, and mostly used in drum labeling, where the label is exposed to direct sunlight, wind and rain. It’s water resistance is it’s most important characteristic, and carries a premium in it’s cost and will need to be combined with a Resin ribbon for best results.

Direct Thermal

A popular choice in the retail trades, where the label has a short life span and will not be exposed to the elements. There are two choices: Top coated thermal and Thermal Econo. No ribbon is required when using these materials but the lack of a ribbon will lead to reduced print head life. The material is also more expensive than the pure paper alternatives, and total printed cost often match that of the Transfer + Ribbon option.

Tags

All the above are known as self adhesive label materials. Tags consist of a combination of the above printing methods and substrates, but it’s main feature is the absence of adhesive and a backing sheet. This type of material is popular in the agricultural industries, a perfect example to illustrate the point are nursery tags.

Ribbons

Spec Systems is in the unique position of having a ribbon converting plant at our production plant in Johannesburg. This essentially entails importing master rolls of ribbon material from Dai Nippon Products – previously Sony Chemicals, and converting it to a selection of common sizes. We can, and do supply ribbons for every machine on the market and can even customize your size and look. We are experts in thermal transfer printing and know exactly which ribbon will work on your material, because of this we will not compromise on quality for the sake of price. In the case of Thermal Transfer Ribbons, it definitely is a case of getting what you pay for.

We have three grades of ribbon:

Resin enhanced Wax

Features DNP’s SmoothCoatTM backcoat, TR4085plusTM provides unparalleled printhead protection, while delivering the darkest, most durable images. In addition, TR4085plusTM prints on a wide range of
substrates at temperatures consistent with other less aggressive Economy Wax products in the market.

Speciality Wax / Resin

TR5080 was specifically developed to cover the widest possible range of flood coated label applications. It performs well on the various inks used on spot and flood-coated labels, eliminating the tendency of the label to slip during the printing process. TR5080 eliminates the need for the use of thermal transfer varnishes on flood coated labels, thereby reducing the total label cost.
TR5080 prints up to 12 inches per second with complete image integrity. Includes DNP’s SmoothCoatTM backcoat, for maximum printhead protection.

Premium Resin

TR6075 is an all purpose resin that prints at high speeds, while maintaining high barcode and image quality. TR6075’s superior chemical and abrasion resistance make it the perfect choice for general or
demanding applications. Includes DNP’s SmoothCoatTM backcoat, for maximum printhead protection.
